About Us

Picture
The annual Mortlake Art Show is managed by the Mortlake Visual Arts Group (MVAG), who operate under the auspices of the Mortlake Community Development Committee Inc (MCDC).

Mortlake had held art shows sporadically in the past. However, none had occured for many years, so in 2015 a group of like-minded people, came together to stage the first Mortlake Art Show that has now become an annual event. 2020 was to be the sixth in the series. However, the covid-19 pandemic, and the effect it had on our daily lives, meant we had to cancel the 2020 show, as did all the other events planned for that week end and throughout the year.

Rather than abandon the Art Show due to the ongoing uncertainty about further restrictions in 2021,  we are now presenting a simplified event which is covid-safe while still providing the opportunity for artists to display their talents, sell their artwork should they want to and offer the community  an uplifting experience after a very dark year.

The Mortlake  Art Show has its roots firmly planted in South Western  Victoria. It is sustained by its community and inspired by a sense of place. Its mission is to encourage local artists of all talents and levels of experience to develop their passion by providing a platform at which they may exhibit their works in an atmosphere of friendship and enjoyment.

Our Supporters
Picture
MCDC and MVAG are most grateful for the continuous support given by the Mortlake RSL tor the Mortlake Art Show,  from the very first show in 2015 until the present.

Without this support we would not have had the great success of the art shows from 2015 to 2019 and the great venue, that is the RSL Hall, to showcase the talents of our local artists  .

We particularly thank the members of the Mortlake RSL for their ongoing encouragement and support which has  given us heart as we come out of the restrictions brought about by the covid pandemic that impacted all the community.

As we present the "Covid-Lite" Mortlake Art Show in 2021 we look forward to the ongoing support for what we anticipate a long partnership presenting a revamped Mortlake Art Show in 2022 and beyond.

Marie and Jim McAloon Award

Picture
Marie and Jim McAloon by Mick Dow

The McAloon family gathered together over Easter 2018 in Mortlake, and talked about the Mortlake Art Show. They had gathered in Mortlake over the June long weekend for the previous two years and have loved attending the Art Show.

The family have generously
offered two prizes for the subsequent shows - The Marie and Jim McAloon award. We gratefully accepted this wonderful contribution for Best in Show and for Young Emerging Artist prizes..

Fran McAloon recalled "As children and adults, the family saw the Western District through their eyes: it was our place of homecoming.  Although we no longer reside here, we wish to dedicate an award in their names to remember their  place and their presence."

Their is no competition in 2021 due to our scaled back "Covid-Lite" art show. However we welcome back the McAloon family with the Marie and Jim McAloon award in 2022 and in future years.

William Aris Alen Award

William Aris Alen lived at Mortlake for some fifty years from the late 1870s onwards and was not only one of the town’s painters and decorators but was the district’s resident artist and taxidermist. William was a prolific artist, specialising a landscapes of the district and the local flora and fauna. In 1916 William produced a painting from a photograph of the old flour windmill with Mt Shadwell in the background, as it would have appeared in 1857.  Some of William’s other works include paintings ducks on a swamp and prize sheep at Ballangeigh station.
Following the first Art Show in 2015 descendants of William have sponsored the William Aris Alen Award is for the artwork that best reflects Mortlake and District. We thank Linda and David Banks again for their generous ongoing support for our Art Show.

There is no competition in 2021 due to our scaled back "Covid-Lite" art show. However we welcome back Linda and David Banks again the William Aris Alen Award in 2022 and in future years.
